Do you struggle with keeping your weed indulgences under wraps? That’s the biggest headache for almost every smoker out there! The odor of cannabis or vaping can linger wherever you go, telling everyone about your last night’s adventure and drawing unwanted attention.

To avoid this situation, you can try making a smoke buddy at home. It’s a mechanical device that reduces the smell of smoke from your breath to keep your weed sesh discreet.

The best part? You can make a DIY smoke buddy with the materials available on hand. Not only that, but you can also adjust your device’s filtration capabilities depending on your preferences and satisfaction levels.

So, there is no need to fill your home with air fresheners after every smoking session. Simply follow the below two methods to make a smoke buddy at home to get rid of that strong smell within a few minutes.

Method 1: Using a Toilet Paper Roll

Materials

  • A toilet paper roll
  • Two elastic bands
  • Dryer sheets
  • Scissors

Steps to Follow

  1. First, take the toilet paper roll and empty it.
  2. Then, fold one dryer sheet in half. You can do it twice to make it fit inside one end of the paper roll.
  3. Use one elastic band around the roll’s end to fix the dryer sheet in the right place. Secure it perfectly to avoid any chance of air leakage.
  4. Now, fold some more dryer sheets in half and place them over the first sheet inside the paper roll. Stuff the sheets until the roll looks about three-quarters full.
  5. Place another rubber band on the other end of the roll to secure the positioning of the dryer sheets.
  6. Your smoke buddy is now ready! To use it when smoking, bring the open end of the roll close to your mouth and blow the vapor or smoke through the dryer sheets. The smoke that comes to your mouth will be filtered and odor-free.

Method 2: Using Two Plastic Bottles

Materials

  • One large plastic bottle
  • One small plastic bottle
  • Rubber band
  • Scissors
  • Drill or a sharp object
  • Activated carbon or charcoal pellets

Steps to Follow

  1. First, cut the bottom of the large plastic bottle with scissors to make an opening.
  2. Now, remove the cap from the other end of the bottle and make multiple holes to let the smoke and odor escape.
  3. Next, take the smaller plastic bottle and cut its bottom like the larger one. Then, remove its cap.
  4. Put the activated carbon or charcoal pellets in the larger bottle until it’s filled two-thirds.
  5. Insert the small bottle into the larger one while pushing the carbon or charcoal down. Ensure both bottles are fitted perfectly, leaving a sealed space at the larger bottle’s bottom.
  6. Use a rubber band to secure both bottles together and ensure it’s airtight.
  7. That’s it; your smoke buddy is now prepared! Put your mouth on the smaller bottle’s opening and exhale the smoke, passing through the activated carbon or charcoal and getting filtered all along.

Note: A homemade smoke buddy minimizes smoke and odor, but it may not be as effective as a ready-made, commercially available one. The carbon filters used in commercial devices are way more powerful than what we used in the above DIY method.

5 Tips to Make Your Smoke Buddy More Effective

Tips to Make Your Smoke Buddy More Effective

A smoke buddy does its job like a pro, but you may find it not performing up to the mark in some instances. If your smoke buddy is acting up, follow the below tips to enhance its effectiveness:

  • Add More Filtering Layers. Sometimes, the filtering material in the smoke buddy becomes less effective over time. In that case, you can add more dryer sheets or activated carbon or charcoal to your device, depending on what method you followed to make it. Doing so provides more surface area for smoke to penetrate and get captured.
  • Make the Device Air Tight. Check whether your device is airtight or leaking smoke. A smoke buddy must be perfectly sealed to prevent the smoke from leaking out or passing through the filtering materials. You can use more rubber bands or tape to secure the plastic bottles or the paper roll.
  • Replace Filtering Materials Frequently. To ensure your device’s optimal filtration, consider replacing the filtering materials (activated carbon or dryer sheets) now and then. With that, clean the residue from your smoke buddy after every use.
  • Sufficient Ventilation. The best smoke buddies have the right number of ventilation holes for efficient smoke evacuation. If your device has fewer holes, it may result in restricted airflow and inefficient smoke filtration. Try making more holes to enhance its performance.
  • Exhale Slowly. Always exhale slowly when using the smoke buddy. It allows enough time for the smoke particles to penetrate the filtering materials and get trapped in the device.

The above tips can take your smoke buddy’s performance to another level. But if they still don’t work, you must consider making a new device or buying a commercially-made one from the market.

Consuming weed using a smoke buddy is fun, but the experience can become a nuisance if you don’t consider some legal and safety measures. Here is what you must keep in mind when using a smoke buddy:

Safety Precautions

  • Always ensure the area where you’re smoking is properly ventilated. It will prevent smoke accumulation, leading to good air quality.
  • Never use a smoke buddy near open flames, i.e., candles, matches, or lighters, to prevent fire risks.
  • Clean the residual buildup from your smoke buddy frequently to ensure its efficiency and longer life span.
  • Don’t share your device with anyone. Sharing the mouthpiece can make you prone to infections and germs, leading to multiple health issues.

Legal Considerations

  • Always learn about your state’s smoking and vaping rules and regulations before entering this adventurous world. It will help ensure you use your smoke buddy within legal restrictions.
  • Smoking buddies are usually prohibited in public properties, such as offices or restaurants. So, inquire about it from the authorities before taking the device out.
  • The rules for smoking, vaping, and smoke buddies differ from country to country. If you plan to travel with your device, research beforehand to avoid getting into legal waters.
  • Ensure you’re properly disposing of the residue from the smoke buddy. Some filtering materials have severe environmental impacts, so follow their proper disposal method to reduce the risks.

Conclusion

It’s super easy to make a smoke buddy at home. You just need to gather a few household items, including a toilet paper roll or two plastic bottles, dryer sheets or activated carbon, rubber bands, scissors, and a drill. Depending on the materials you found, follow any of the above two methods to prepare a smoke buddy within a few minutes.

Make sure your device is properly sealed and has enough filtration materials. Also, don’t forget to check your state’s rules related to smoking and vaping before using your smoking buddy out in public. Better safe than sorry!
